Slashdot | Calif. Initiative To Regulate Search Engines?
This is an interesting question, especially for the SEO industry. When search engines keep search data, they can compile it and publish it for markting purposes. This comes in very handy for SEOs. Services such as Wordtracker and the Overture Keyword Suggestion Tool are invaluable to us as it helps us choose the best direction in which to lead our clients for top results. Another great use of search data is Google Zeitgeist.
But retention of such data can become a touchy subject when the data becomes more personal. Locations, IP addresses, email addresses, etc. being kept in combination with your search data might be troublesome to some people. And in recent times, discussion about sharing this information with government intelligence agencies has popped up here and there. Similar to the NSA wiretapping issues, people feel their privacy is being comprimised.
What are your thoughts? Do you think the risks of not collecting such intelligence outweighs the benefits of personal privacy? Or vice versa? What search data tools do you use? Discuss these questions and more in our forums, Groupthink.
