I've just finished reading Robert Cialdini's fascinating book Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion, and I think it's a fairly safe assessment to say that this may well be the best book ever written on the art of marketing and persuasion. Its relevance to the field of SEO is enormous as it details fascinating tendencies that we all have in our every day decisions to comply with a request.
As an SEO, the book has given me a mass of ideas for new ways to approach link development. The subtle approach to a potential complier (in this case, someone who could potentially give me a link) is incredibly powerful, and has already improved the quantity and quality of responses that I get from those that I am in communications with.
Not only is this book is a virtual must-read for anyone involved in acquiring links, I would strongly recommend everyone read it. It's relevance to every human life on the planet is enormous and it touches on a variety of different subjects from how to be a wise consumer to how to improve your skills as a parent.
